ICEA Approved Childbirth Education Workshops

ICEA Childbirth Educator

MTM Training offers a childbirth educator training that is approved by ICEA for certification purposes.  In our 2 day hands on and interactive training you will learn the basics of becoming a childbirth educator.  You will leave with the skills to set up a classroom and curriculum and be able to start teaching.  Your trainer who has been working in the birth world for more than 15 yrs will also serve as your mentor as you move from novice educator to an experienced one.

This training is only one step towards certification and trainees should visit the ICEA website  for full details on certification requirements and fees.

At this workshop we will go over all of the basics of creating a classroom, options in teaching, and getting your class up and running.  We do a lot of interactive activities, have discussions, there are lectures and videos, and you get to try your hand at teaching to our group.....we touch on many different aspects and explore all types of learning styles.  We also incorporate technology into the classroom.  All of this provides participants the opportunity to also expand your learning and experience as we go through the two days.  The topics we cover (although not in this order) include:

  • ICEA and Family-centered Maternity Care
  • Informed Decision-making and Evidence-based Teaching
  • Teaching Skills for the Childbirth Educator
  • Curriculum Development
  • Healthy Lifestyles and Reproduction
  • The Labor Process
  • Coping Skills for Labor
  • Transition and Birth
  • Complications, interventions, and Unexpected Outcomes
  • Postpartum and the Newborn Care

The first 2 days are from 9 am to 6:30 pm, and the third optional day goes until 6 pm (or later).  Class stays open the third day as long as you have business related questions and need assistance.

Training fee: $525 ICEA workshop only / $600 to add the business training

For anyone planning on working for themselves I highly encourage adding on the 3rd day for an additional $75.  Learn more about the business workshop here  (By adding the business workshop I include unlimited phone and email mentoring support, access to my e-newsletters which help guide you through starting from training to setting up a successful business,  access to my online Facebook support group, and so much more starting from the date of registration through the completion of certification).

Registrations that occur within one month of the training will incur a $50 late registration fee unless stated otherwise.*

The exact location of the training will be determined one month before the event is scheduled to occur based upon the number of people enrolled (unless it is already listed below).  There must be a minimum of four people enrolled for the training to run, and there will be a limited number of late registration spots available.

"Michelle, who humbly insists that she is not creative, is actually wildly creative and innovative as an instructor! She introduced us to so many things that, to quote her, I had "missed the boat" on thus far. Things like making sure that you have a way to know whether your students understand the material - in other words not just talking AT them, but checking for understanding. Making sure that you are considering the needs of both parents and the family as a whole in addition to mom's as an individual. Making sure that as an instructor, you are examining your biases and checking yourself. My very favorite activity was on day two. I won't give away the specifics but it forced me to examine my assumptions about certain situations, and hear different points of view. Ultimately for this activity the group had to come to a consensus and the overarching theme was "it depends on so many things". There are always two sides to the pancake!"  Katherine McCarty, 2016 (to read the full blog visit here)

"Excellent class.  This childbirth Educator class exceeded my expectations:  I have a clear understanding of what ICEA requires, and it was super fun both days.  Michelle has in-depth knowledge and experience in teaching childbirth education and she stays on top of new developments. I learned about teaching childbirth education from the ICEA model such as: hands-on, videos, and role-playing, and clear objectives, plus learned and practiced many things such as spiraling, rebozzo, babywearing and open communication.  Positive energy from being with this group for two days."  Martha Wasserman (2016)

"I am so glad I attended Michelle's Childbirth  Educator Class. It was two very full days with  a wide range of information, ideas and advice. Michelle has a very engaging teaching style. I felt very relaxed and had a lot of fun while learning a ton! She makes sure you have everything you need to know for the certification test and beyond. I left feeling excited about the  possibilities for my future in Childbirth Education." Heather Sutton (2016)
